Although we are not aware, the way we clean our homes is adding pollution to the planet and attacking our health. Pay attention to this! You will have a healthy home and you will join the movement for a green, non-toxic world.
Living with the enemy
The US Environmental Protection Agency says that in an average home the air is up to 500 percent more polluted than its exterior due to the toxicity of common cleaning products. Greenpeace claims that a European house contains up to 120 substances that predispose to allergies, skin diseases or general toxicity.
Women, children and pets are the most affected, the former because they still do most of the house chores, children because their organs and immune systems are developing and vulnerable and since they have a higher respiratory rate, they absorb more pollutants, and animals because they remain at home almost all the time.
According to Women's Voices for the Earth, asthma - a chronic condition on the rise - is being linked to common cleansers acting as triggers or aggravating factors.
The artificial aromas that we put in our homes through "air fresheners" are another threat, due to components hostile to the respiratory and reproductive systems, and even carcinogenic.
In September 2016 the US FDA ordered 19 antibacterial ingredients to be removed from personal soaps, fearing their long-term effects plus they were not believed to clean better. In Consumer Report they think this is insufficient because it does not mention toothpastes, deodorants, wipes and cleaning products with these and other dangerous ingredients.
They warn that antibacterial such as triclosan are under suspicion of affecting hormonal health thus contributing to infertility, precocious puberty, obesity, and its widespread use worsens the current global problem of super-resistant bacteria.
And after we use these undesirable ingredients, they end up in rivers and seas, further polluting the planet.
Let's change from home!
1) Allow air to circulate often, let the sun in and remove dust daily. Experts say that pollutants from the paint on walls, cleaning products, etc. settle on dust and we end up inhaling them.
2) All-Purpose Cleaner. In a glass spray bottle combine ¼ cup white vinegar, 1 ¾ cups water and the essential oil or Blend you prefer, you can choose: a) 15 drops of lavender and 15 of lemon oil; B) 10 drops of eucalyptus, 10 peppermint and 10 wild orange; C) 30 drops of the "Protective Blend"; or d) 15 drops of grapefruit and 15 of the "Protective Blend". Shake vigorously before use.
3) Floors. Mix ¼ cup of white vinegar, 1 liter of water and 5 to 10 drops of essential oil, white fir or lemon. Apply this Blend with a cloth and remove it after a few minutes with a clean and damp mop.
4) Clean bathrooms, quickly and without risking intoxication. Mix ¾ cup of baking soda, ¼ cup of unscented liquid Castile soap, and 1 tablespoon of water. Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 5 to 10 drops of lemon oil, and mix until smooth. Apply it to tiles, floor and toilet, wait 10 minutes, rub well with a cloth, and finally remove the mixture, wiping everything with a damp cloth.
5) Refrigerator, microwave. In a spray bottle mix 1 cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of hot water and 15 drops of lemon oil. Apply, then scrub with a cloth and finally clean with a damp cloth.
6) Spotless kitchen, 20 minutes. ¼ cup of baking soda, ¼ cup salt, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water, 4-5 drops of "Purifying Blend", stir to form a paste to spread over burners and the whole stove; wait 15 minutes, rub with a sponge and finally remove pasta and dirt with a cloth.
7) Windows, mirrors. In a bottle spray 1 ½ cup of white vinegar, ½ cup of distilled water and 8 drops of some citrus oil. Shake well.
8) Carpets. 1 cup of baking soda and 20-50 drops of melaleuca, lemon or "Purifying Blend" in a spray bottle, stir well and let stand overnight; shake again, spray, wait 15 minutes and vacuum (if you have a water tank put 5 drops of oil).
9) Make air fresheners. Put them in bathrooms, near trash and dirty clothes ... In a glass jar put ¼ cup of baking soda, add 6 drops of cassia, geranium, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, the "Protective Blend", the "Purifier" or wild orange; cover with a piece of cloth with holes, secure with a band or rubber band ... shake often to activate the aroma, and if it decreases, add 3 drops of oil.
10) Aromatherapy diffusers, a magnificent investment. As soon as you can, acquire a diffuser of essential oils, you will enjoy pleasant aromas and additionally, you will purify your air, protecting yourself from germs and improving your mood and immunity.
