Aromatherapy
The word emerged in the early 20th century, but the concept goes back thousands of years. It is a branch of therapy with plants that encloses all the benefits from the use of essential oils, those fabulous aromatic natural substances which represent the highest concentration and power of different plant species, something like the DNA of each plant.
Since ancient times, many cultures used the scents to influence on physical health, emotional life, intellectual performance and development of human potential, but it is just now that science can explain how this is possible.
Oils and smell and the way they work
Because of its composition, rich in natural chemicals with antiseptic properties, the scents of some oils are diffused to purify the air of homes and workplaces while in Europe its use is now extended to hospitals to clean up the air.
One of the most traditional uses of essential oils is to inhale them to prevent or treat colds, cough, sore throat and the like. But the use of aromatic oils has much more profound effects.
Each one of us has 6 million olfactory cells which are able to differentiate about ten thousand odors. Within seconds a scent reaches the brain, where it is processed and this happens in the most primitive area in the evolution of our brain, the limbic system.
This system is super important because it regulates a lot of instinctive functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and hormone secretion. Additionally, this system is closely related to long-term memory, attention levels, sexual and survival instincts, emotions such as anger, pleasure, fear and in general any behavior that bypasses our conscious assessment.
Another important point is that the limbic system, through an organ called the amygdala plays a starring role in emotional traumas.
Thanks to the healthy effects of essential oils - experienced and recorded for thousands of years in different cultures - today we have a unique and powerful resource to intervene positively, harmonically and in a healing way on those areas of our body and our being that are so important but so difficult to reach with drugs, or just through conscious will.
Beginning to benefit from essential aromas
If you want to get started, it is ideal to acquire a diffuser for oils. Best diffusers create a fine mist of essential oil in the ambiance, which remains long in the air spreading its benefits. They do not use heat, as this may alter therapeutic properties, and some can even be programmed for your convenience.
Some other good ways to use aromatic scents are:
- Put it close to your face and inhale directly from the oil container
- Put 1 or 2 drops on your hands, rub them, cover mouth and nose and inhale.
- Place 2 or 3 drops on the pillow before bedtime
- Spray oil on a cotton ball and set it on the fan or air conditioning grille outlet at home, work or car
- Take a pleasant aroma and a portable emotional support applying 1 or 2 drops on wrists and neck
- Create an exclusive personalized perfume with your favorite oil or oils by dissolving a teaspoon of distilled water in 20 drops of alcohol (vodka may be used) and add 10 to 15 drops of oil
